History

Conveniently located just a few miles east of Baton Rouge, Denham Springs began its life as a trading community that took advantage of boat and barge traffic on the nearby Mississippi River. Geography

Like much of the rest of southern Louisiana, Denham Springs is surrounded by a network of waterways, wetlands and low-lying pine forests. Although there’s some agricultural land to the north and east of the city, most of the surrounding land has been developed for industrial or residential use. Denham Springs sits about 85 miles northwest of New Orleans by car, making it relatively easy for locals to travel to the Crescent City. However, the unique geography of the region around Denham Springs makes the area a tourist destination in its own right. Nearby bastions of old-growth subtropical forest and swampland include Tickfaw State Park and Sidney Hutchinson Park.

Population and Demographics

Over the past few decades, Denham Springs has grown from a sleepy bayou town into a bustling bedroom community. According to the 2010 Census, over 10,000 people now reside in the city, and many more arrive each year. Many of the city’s residents work in the petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants that line the nearby Mississippi River. Others contribute their talents to Baton Rouge’s burgeoning financial and legal industries. Still others work in state government there. Thanks to this diversified local economy, the city’s families enjoy healthy living standards and low crime rates.

As one of the principal cities of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, Denham Springs has more than its fair share of attractions. Every year, the city hosts two regionally acclaimed celebrations: A “pre-Mardi Gras” parade and an antique-focused festival known as Springfest. Of course, the Denham Springs Antique District enchants locals and visitors on a year-round basis. Folks who prefer to get outdoors can check out the shoreline of nearby Lake Pontchartrain, a brackish estuary that offers nearly endless opportunities for boaters and fishermen. In nearby Folsom, the Global Wildlife Center is stocked with a range of native and exotic animals.

Climate and Weather

Denham Springs has a humid subtropical climate that’s typical of much of the Gulf Coast region. Whereas winters tend to be mild, wet and short, summers are often long and hot. Fortunately, the frequent thunderstorms that roll through during the spring and summer months often break the heat and set up strings of dry, mild days. Since Denham Springs rarely sees tornadoes or large hail, residents tend not to worry about severe weather. What’s more, the city’s southerly location allows it to avoid the brunt of the Arctic blasts that affect northern Louisiana.
