Is The Vaster Wilds a religious book? ›

The Vaster Wilds is historical fiction only in the most literal sense. A better description would be Christian allegory in a post-Christian spirit.

The girl's final moments are a blend of reality and hallucination. She envisions an alternative life where she finds peace and community. However, she knows that survival in the wilderness is unlikely. Her body succumbs to smallpox, and she dies alone in the wilderness.

In flashbacks, we learn that the girl, who only knows that she is between sixteen and eighteen, was plucked from a London poorhouse as a child and brought to live with a wealthy family whose mistress treated her like a pet: the girl is cosseted and indulged, well-fed and, with one significant exception, treated gently.

This show has a disturbing amount of profanity and shows someone of faith swearing (JFC) and not holding to her belief system. There is a lot of feminist, anti-patriarchy content (men are responsible for the ills of the world essentially). There is also drug use and sexual content.

The Vaster Wilds is set in the fledgling Jamestown colony around the winter of 1609–1610, a period known to historians as the "starving time" because over 80% of the colonists died of disease and famine.

What Is Wild Anyway? It seems as if Amazon Prime took a page from William Golding's 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, and created with it their latest TV-16 rated drama, The Wilds. “The Vaster Wilds” is a testament to individual struggle. The girl leaves her home behind, but also, like the hermit, her language. As such, the other humans she encounters are largely ephemeral. She is a stranger to them; they are strangers to her.

The Vaster Wilds is beautiful and lyrical, yet stark. Groff paints striking images without flowery language. Instead, her carefully selected words evoke the brutal winter landscape the girl battles throughout her journey.

While The Wilds isn't based on any existing property, it is clearly shaped by — and in some instances, in opposition to — a few choice classics, including a book, a cult film, prestige TV, and even some of your reality TV shows.

And it's one that isn't nearly as teen friendly as the previews suggest. The girls' abnormal knowledge of survival skills are occasionally fun to watch, but they're a small piece in this complex puzzle. We hear heavy language frequently—so much so that some R-rated movies can't even compete.
