I've never heard of such a thing, I wonder whether pork might not prove a little dry for the purpose. Also I suppose as the doner kebab originates from Turkey pork was never used.
I've eaten a lot of Pinchos Morunos in Spain which are essentially pork shish kebabs and are utterly, utterly delicious.

I have had pork Souvlaki (Gyros) in Athens, Greece. It was more like Shish though.
Have to agree with SiteMaster Jim that pork is too easy to overcook and may not make a good Donner, interesting concept though! |

On a follow up of what I wrote earlier, a friend recently returned from Greece (Mykonos) and assures me he had Pork Doner while out there.
He was too drunk to offer much in the way of information but says it was good and definately pork.
There is a souvlaki section of an Athens guide here:
http://www.athensguide.com/souvlaki.html
So there is Pork cooked on an upright spit as opposed to the Pork-Shish I personally had.
The website does not clearly state if it is minced meat based like a traditional Donner OR cuts of meatl like a Scwarma OR if BOTH exist though.
My mate reckons it was "kofte" like - which is a rather pointless description as it was DEFINATLY carved from a large vertical spit.
Anyone (sober) else been to Greece and tried a Pork Donner/scwarma souvlaki type thing?
If I go back Iwill be afte the beef version. |
